Over eight years have passed since Bungie joined Activision in 2010, with a planned 10-year publishing deal that would eventually lead to Destiny (2014) and Destiny 2 (2017). However, that contract appears to have expired just short of its original agreement, with Activision announcing that the two companies will be splitting up and going their separate ways as of January 10, 2019. Developer Bungie will be able to keep the rights to its IP created with Activision, Destiny, and will be in charge of all facets of the game from here on out, including publishing and marketing. For players, not much will immediately change, as Destiny 2 will still be available on BattleNet regardless of the split and any upcoming game events are still on track. Regarding the separation, Bungie stated that the company is thankful for Activision's help, but that they're also excited to move on and continue creating their game on their own, while Activision focuses on its other IPs that it still owns.

This game isn't on steam right? I hear lots of good things about the game but never once tried it.

It's on the Battle.net launcher. I wasn't very impressed with the beta, and I heard the original game was better after the expansions, but who knows. They were giving away the base game of Destiny 2 a little while ago IIRC, I picked it up and haven't touched it since.

Activision sucks. They're ruining Blizzard too. "Do U GuYs nOT hAVe pHoNeS?"

This news is surprising as hell, and yet at the very same time not surprising at all.

EDIT: I have to wonder if it will be released on Steam now.

This is very interesting news. I do wonder how they managed to do it. Not only did they get out of a 10 year contract at only 9 years, they also got to keep their IP, AND from one of the greediest scumbaggiest publishers to have ever existed. Developers splitting from publishers is not anything new, no matter who the publisher is, but being able to KEEP their IP is the real big news here. That almost never happens. Especially from Activision.

While I'm not into Destiny since it has very little to offer for solo players, I'm very interested to see what Bungie will be able to do now. Hopefully they'll be able to salvage something from the hot ever-burning dumpster fire that is Destiny 2. I actually wonder if that isn't why Activision let them keep their IP. If Activision feels that Destiny's reputation has been drowned in mud enough that it's not worth holding on to, I could see even them letting it go. Regardless of how much faith one has or doesn't have in Bungie, it will be interesting to see what they do next. I wish them luck.

They had an agreement for 5 different destiny titles under activision. So either they abused a loop hole or paid them to get out of it. Most likely the latter and I have to wonder how they’ll pass that fee onto gamers later!

In this case it wasn't Activision that fucked them, they did it themselves

    The Traveler heard our cries.

Without Activision fuckery perhaps we can have the original full game that we were promised without any predatory loot-skinner box bullshit.

    Maybe hire O'Donnell back???

Either way, we'll now truly see if bungie or Activision was pulling the strings when all the controversies hit Destiny 2.

I have a feeling their corporate overlord was responsible.

Hate to burst your bubble, but it was Bungie's decision to add the lootboxes. They added it simply because back during D1 they couldn't afford to keep producing tri-annual expansions, but without the funding from the expansions, Activision likely wouldn't have let them just stop producing expansions. So they came up with the compromise of adding in the original eververse.

The current eververse since D2 however is a skinning box seeing as we got our tri-annual expansions. -.-

greed got to these mofos. Destiny is a DEAD FRANCHISE. Its hard to rebuild grabbage games that were never good in the first place. Just look at Assassins Creed, they messed up with the first ps4 AC and have had trouble ever since. Same with Medal of Honor

Aren't these guys moving on to a Netease partnership? Very much out of the frying pan and into the fire if so.

I don't think Destiny 3 will be any better. They're gonna lack the funds to make it a good game again if they're on their own again. Seriously don't know where they'll get their funding from seeing Destiny is kinda a big project with a lot of costs coming with it like '' server management, DLC, events etc ...''
